Most of getting ready for a roof replacement happens inside the house, not on the roof. A week out, plan where the kids, pets, cars and your workday will be. The day before, clear the driveway, take fragile things off the walls, cover what is stored in the attic and unlock the gates. On the morning itself, keep children and pets indoors, meet the crew lead, and agree on how you will reach each other. Afterward, walk the property with the crew before they leave.
We have written about the job from the roof's point of view in our hour-by-hour roof replacement guide and on our installation day page. This article is about the other side of the ladder: your household. A replacement is loud, it shakes the walls a little, and it puts a busy work zone around your home for a day or two.
Your preparation timeline
About a week before
- Confirm the date and the expected arrival time, and ask how weather changes are communicated.
- Decide where pets will spend the day. For an anxious dog, a day with a relative or at daycare may be easier than a day of hammering overhead.
- Look at your calendar. Move important video calls if you can.
- Let close neighbors know the date, especially if you share a driveway, fence line or street parking.
- If you have an HOA, make sure any required approval is in place before materials arrive. Our guide to HOA roof approval covers that step.
The day before
- Move vehicles out of the driveway and garage if you will need them during the day. The driveway is often where materials and debris are managed.
- Take pictures, mirrors and shelves of keepsakes down from exterior walls and walls that rise into the attic. Vibration from tear-off and nailing can shift them.
- Cover or move items stored in the attic. Some dust and granules can fall through gaps in the decking during tear-off.
- Move patio furniture, grills, planters and toys away from the house.
- Unlock gates and point out delicate plants, sprinkler heads or garden features so protection can be planned around them.
- Consider pausing your sprinkler schedule so the yard and tarps aren't wet while the crew works.
The morning of
- Bring pets and children inside before the crew starts.
- Meet the crew lead, confirm your phone number, and mention anything new since your last conversation.
After the crew leaves
- Do the final walkthrough together and ask any questions while the crew is still there.
- Keep your completion photos, warranty documents and paperwork in one place.
- Check the attic in the next day or two, put wall décor back, and wipe down anything that collected dust.
How do I keep kids and pets safe?
Debris comes off the roof edge all day, ladders go up and down, and a dumpster or trailer is usually nearby. The simplest rule is that kids and pets stay inside or away from home while the crew is working, and the yard is off-limits until the cleanup is finished.
Pets are often the most stressed members of the family. Pick a quiet interior room, close the door, and add a sign so no one opens it by accident. Make sure collars and ID tags are current; the ASPCA recommends up-to-date identification and microchipping as a general precaution (ASPCA pet preparedness guidance). Remember that gates may be open during the day, so let dogs out only on a leash until the work and sweep are done.
For children, it helps to explain ahead of time what they will hear and why the yard is closed for a day. Nails are swept, but give the lawn a look yourself before bare feet or play return.
Can I work from home during a roof replacement?
You can stay home; you don't need to leave. Tear-off is usually the loudest stretch, and nailing continues through the shingle installation. For calls that really matter, a coffee shop, library or office may be the better plan. A room on the ground floor, on the side of the house opposite the dumpster, is usually the quietest choice at home.
What about the attic, walls and fragile items?
Every nail sends a small shock through the framing. Most homes see nothing more than a picture going crooked, but it is worth protecting anything you would be upset to lose: framed art, mirrors, glass shelves, and collectibles on top floors. In the attic, a drop cloth or old sheet over stored boxes saves cleanup later.
Vehicles, garage and driveway
Park on the street or a nearby lot before the crew arrives, following your HOA or street rules. If you leave a car in the garage, it may be blocked in until materials or debris are cleared. Close the garage door so falling debris does not bounce inside, and move bikes or tools that sit just outside it.
What should I ask the crew lead?
| Question | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Who is my point of contact today, and what's the best way to reach them? | You know whom to call if a pet gets out or a plan changes. |
| When is tear-off likely to be loudest? | You can schedule calls, naps and errands around it. |
| Where will materials and the dumpster go? | You can keep cars, kids and pets clear of those areas. |
| If you find damaged decking, how will I be told? | You know a decision may be needed and how it will be documented. |
| What happens if weather moves in? | You know how exposed areas are protected and how the schedule changes. |
| When will the final walkthrough be? | You can be home for it. |
How we handle the household side
Before installation, we share clear preparation instructions covering vehicles, gates and fragile items, and we plan property protection for landscaping, siding and walkways. We confirm your schedule in advance and keep you updated through the day. You are welcome to stay home. When we find rotted or damaged decking, we document it and replace unsuitable decking where authorized. At the end, we run magnetic nail sweeps across the yard and driveway, then walk the property with you and hand over completion photos and warranty documents.
Questions about getting ready for installation day
How long will my household be affected?
Most residential asphalt-shingle replacements take one to two days, depending on the size and complexity of the roof and the weather. The schedule is confirmed in advance.
Should I take pictures off my walls?
Yes, for anything fragile on exterior walls or walls that reach the attic. Vibration from tear-off and nailing can shift frames and mirrors.
Do I need to be there for the final walkthrough?
It is the best time to ask questions and see the finished roof, the cleanup and your completion photos, so plan to be home for it if you can.
