There is no single best shingle brand for every Houston home. GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, Atlas, Malarkey and TAMKO all make architectural shingles that can perform well in our heat, humidity, wind and hail when they are installed correctly. The real differences are in specific product lines: wind warranty ratings, algae-resistance coverage, impact-rated (Class 4) options, color range and how easy the shingle is to get locally. For most homes, installation and ventilation matter more than the logo on the bundle.
Homeowners often ask us which brand is best, hoping for a one-word answer. The honest answer is that it depends on your roof, your budget, your HOA and how long you plan to stay. Below is a fair comparison built from each manufacturer's own published information, plus what we see installing these roofs around Spring and Houston. Manufacturers change product lines and warranty terms, so always confirm the current written warranty for the exact product on your proposal.
Houston roofs face five main tests:
- Heat. Long, hot summers age asphalt, and a poorly ventilated attic makes it worse. Our guide to attic ventilation in Texas heat explains why.
- Humidity and algae. Warm, damp air feeds the algae that cause black streaks. Algae-resistant granules slow it down.
- Wind. Gulf storms and hurricane season test how well shingles are sealed and nailed.
- Hail. Impact-rated shingles resist hail better than standard ones, though none are hail-proof.
- Looks and HOA rules. Color availability can decide the brand before performance does.

How do the major shingle brands compare?
| Brand | Core architectural line | Impact-rated option | Often chosen for |
|---|---|---|---|
| GAF | Timberline HDZ | Timberline AS II | Local availability and easy color matching later |
| Owens Corning | TruDefinition Duration | Duration FLEX | Reinforced SureNail nailing strip |
| CertainTeed | Landmark | NorthGate | Wide color palette |
| Atlas | Pinnacle Pristine | StormMaster Shake and Slate | Scotchgard algae protection and Class 4 looks |
| Malarkey | Highlander, Vista | Legacy, Windsor | Polymer-modified (rubberized) asphalt |
| TAMKO | Heritage | StormFighter IR | Value-focused architectural shingle |
Which shingle brands have the best wind ratings?
Most major architectural shingles carry wind warranties in the 110 to 130 mph range, and several go higher with specific installation steps or accessories. According to each manufacturer's published information:
| Shingle line | Wind warranty coverage |
|---|---|
| GAF Timberline HDZ | 110 mph coverage, or 130 mph with special installation. GAF's WindProven limited wind warranty removes the maximum wind speed limit for 15 years when LayerLock shingles are installed with at least four qualifying GAF accessories. |
| Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration | A 130 mph wind resistance limited warranty. |
| CertainTeed Landmark | A 15-year, 110 mph wind warranty, upgradable to 160 mph with CertainTeed starter and hip and ridge products. |
| Atlas Pinnacle Pristine | Wind warranty coverage up to 130 mph. |
| Malarkey Legacy | 110 mph standard and 130 mph enhanced wind warranty. |
| TAMKO Heritage | 110 mph with standard application and 130 mph with high-wind application, for a 15-year wind warranty term. |
A wind warranty is not a hurricane guarantee. The higher ratings usually depend on extra nails or matching starter and ridge products, and TAMKO's warranty, for example, ends its wind coverage if winds exceed the rated speed. That is why the installation details matter as much as the number.
Which shingles resist algae best in Houston humidity?
All six brands offer algae-resistant products, but the coverage differs:
| Brand or product line | Algae coverage |
|---|---|
| GAF StainGuard Plus | 25-year limited warranty against blue-green algae discoloration, with a 10-year non-prorated period. |
| Owens Corning StreakGuard | Up to 25 years of algae coverage when Owens Corning hip and ridge shingles are used, otherwise 10 years. |
| CertainTeed StreakFighter | 25 years on Landmark and 30 years on Landmark PRO. |
| Atlas and Malarkey | Scotchgard Protector lines that use copper-containing granules; Malarkey's Legacy Scotchgard carries a limited lifetime algae warranty. |
| TAMKO | A 10-year algae cleaning limited warranty that covers cleaning costs rather than replacement. |

Are Class 4 impact-resistant shingles worth it?
Class 4 is the highest rating under the UL 2218 impact test. Every brand here offers at least one Class 4 option, and some, like Atlas StormMaster and Malarkey Legacy, build it into the line. Standard lines differ too: CertainTeed lists Landmark at UL 2218 Class 3. Class 4 does not mean hail-proof; severe hail can still damage it. Many Texas insurers price impact-rated roofs differently, so ask your carrier what it would mean for your policy before deciding. We are happy to quote both options side by side.
How do shingle warranties differ between brands?
Most architectural shingles from these brands carry a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner of a single-family home, but the important part is the non-prorated period at the start, when coverage is strongest. TAMKO Heritage lists a 10-year Full Start period, CertainTeed a 10-year SureStart period, and Malarkey Legacy a 20-year non-prorated period. Enhanced system warranties usually require a contractor credentialed by that manufacturer. Our roofing warranty page explains how manufacturer coverage and our workmanship warranty work together.
Why does the installer matter more than the brand?
A top-tier shingle nailed high, installed without proper starter strips or put over a hot, poorly vented attic can fail early, and the manufacturer may decline coverage because it was not installed to its instructions. A mid-range shingle installed carefully, with new flashing and balanced ventilation, can outperform it for years. When comparing contractors, ask how they nail, what accessories they use and whether they follow the manufacturer's written instructions. Our guide to choosing a trustworthy roofing contractor has a full checklist.
We are not tied to one manufacturer and we do not claim a certification we do not hold. We install to the manufacturer's specification and put the exact product line, color and written warranty in your proposal. You can browse all six on our brands page.
Shingle brand questions
What is the best shingle brand for Houston?
There is no single best brand. A quality architectural shingle from any of these six manufacturers can perform well here. Choose based on wind and algae coverage, impact rating, color and budget, then focus on the installer.
Is GAF better than Owens Corning or CertainTeed?
Not across the board. Their core lines are comparable when installed correctly. Differences show up in color palettes, nailing features, accessory requirements for higher wind ratings and local availability.
Do premium shingles last longer in Houston heat?
Heavier or polymer-modified shingles can handle heat cycling and impact better, but attic ventilation and installation have a bigger effect on real-world life than the price tier.
